Nu is a French television series, set in the not too distant future of French society. I have heard a lot about the series on the internet. But until now, a few clips, promotional images and posters and a listing in the naturist movie database, was all I could access. I was unable view the actual show. Now, thanks to the French TV Channel on Amazon Prime, I was able to watch the first season of the series from 2018.IMG 4646

Show synopsis

In 2026, a radical change requires everyone to live naked in a pacified and peaceful France. But the murder of a young woman found dressed revives tensions. The investigation is entrusted to a young inspector who collaborates with her ex-partner, just out of the coma in which he had fallen at the time … where everyone was still wearing clothes.

jVWhTvUpGgvyYn2ApS9OyOAw7GATo spell it out a police detective wakes from a coma in 2026 to find there has been a new French Revolution. In the name of transparency  a newly elected leader has led to country to become a nude society. Simple nudity is expected in every aspect of social public and private life.

Not on US television

Freedom, equality nudity. That is the slogan of the new French society where nudity is mandatory. My first thought was would  never make it to a cable television or streaming channel in the United States. Though, the first two words in the slogan might resonate the last of the three definitely does not. The frequent occurrences of bare breasts and full frontal male nudity on screen would just be too much for the increasingly puritanical American society. I could see heads exploding, at the season 1 Episode 5 co-ed police officer gym scene with penises and and breasts moving around as naked bodies are exercised.

Intriguing concept

The concept is intriguing and engaging. I was prompted to ask what would actually happen if the nude revolution so many speak of online actually happened? Is anyone really prepared for that reality and how our lives and mind would need to change? In the second episode there is a scene where the main character undergoes readjustment therapy. The doctor repeatedly presents him with two flash cards, that say Erection? NO! Clothing? NO!

We don’t get to see how people in this new French society struggle to adjust to social public nudity. I suspect in the real world of today’s sexualized nudity, an equal amount of those clamoring for a nude revolution and those who want us all to be covered up would need the therapy sessions. The actors do a great job of depicting all the complexities of society and social interaction that remain despite everyone being nude. Relationships still take effort. People still get off sexually, on unusual things.

Beyond the nakedness

Beyond all the naked  and partially clothed bodies that quickly becomes unremarkable, there is social commentary here. Once you get past the naked penises, there is the realization, that nakedness despite good intentions does not solve all of society’s problem. This is wonderfully expressed in the show? Crime still exist, mental health issues persist. Mandating nudity discards and displaces those who for a myriad of reasons, aren’t ready to go clothes free all the time. A new social underclass is created, clothing fetish clubs open up. Whenever an activity is prohibited it eventually prompts some to break the rules.

I highly recommend this really interesting creative and engaging television series for viewing. Those seeking the titillation of naked bodies will likely be disappointed. Those seeking solid television entertainment with a significant naturist interest beyond nudity are rewarded by this excellent series. If you have Amazon Prime Video,  you owe it to yourself to find the French Channel and watch Nu on free trial or subscription. Come back after you watch and share your own rating. Don’t forget to bare your thoughts in the comments.
