Zo-e Nomads of the Amazon is episode four of the National Geographic documentary series Tribal Odyssey. Tribal Odyssey explores life and practices of indigenous “tribal” people around the world. The opening to the series warns the viewer that indigenous nudity which may not be suitable for younger viewers will be seen. It is an ironic yet realistic warning. The episode reviewed shows the life of the Zo-e included no clothing and only a few select body adornments.
The narrator reminds the viewer that the Zo-e people have lived this way for thousands of years. It is a reminder to modern day naturism that naturism’s origins lie with the indigenous people of the world. They practiced clothes free living in harmony with nature long before the pioneers of modern naturism fled unhealthy cities to embrace nudity, health and well being.
These indigenous Zo-e naturists enjoy the same kind of things that modern naturists do. Basking in the sun, frolicking in the water, dancing, cooking eating and sleeping naked. The difference is they never consider needing clothes for the non recreational routines of daily life. Hunting, farming manufacturing (yes the manufacture things like the head dresses women wear) are all done sans clothing. One of the less obvious aspects of naturism is clearly on view among the Zo-e. They lack of clothing and need for it creates what eco-naturist would call a minimalist lifestyle. They can literally put all their possessions on their backs and move whenever they desire.
One remarkable aspect of this indigenous naturist life is that Zo-e children and adults interaction with each other without even a hint a sexuality. This made us wonder if the civilized worlds preoccupation with associating sex and nudity is strictly a 1st world creation. To be clear the social morays surrounding marriage are quite different from most western ones and my ruffle some sensibilities. The same is true of the Zo-e peoples hunting practices and consumption of meat. Vegan naturists you have been warned. None of that diminishes the natural expression of naturist life despite in this documentary look at the Zo-e. It is something that felt beautiful it it’s simplicity, something most modern western non indigenous people can only yearn for. If you ever want to see what naturism looks like when it is fully baked into a culture and way of life then don’t miss the chance to view Zo-e Nomads of the Amazon episode four of season one of Tribal Odyssey.
